Course Description

In the wax modeling module, students will create two wax pieces. The first piece will be either a dome-shaped ring or a table ring. The student will learn how to calculate the conversion from wax weight to silver and use measurement lines to sculpt the ring. This piece can be finished with polishing techniques or by exploring textures. The second piece will be a simple pendant where we will explore natural wax modeling textures. The proposed pieces are: Max # Students: 3 Prerequisite Requirements: Module 3 or some basic knowledge of jewelry-making techniques. With Module 5, the student will be able to make the most of this module. Language: English and Portuguese Learning Level: Intermediate Max # Students: 3 Duration: Meets weekly for 4 hours each Monday, for 4 weeks (16 hours total) Course Objective: to build upon the foundational skills learned in Modules 1 - 5 with wax design prototypes for personalized design Finished Project Piece: Either (a) ring or (b) pendant Activities We Will Cover: Design and Compose in Wax: • Design pieces / Sculpt pieces with wax tools / Model wax with a soldering iron and hot air In Wax: • Saw / Use precise techniques for measurements / File / Sand / Decorate / Finish in wax In Silver: • After transforming the pieces into silver, finish the silver What's Included in the Price: Use of studio machinery and equipment • Use of individual and shared tools • Wear material (the material that undergoes gradual removal or deformation due to mechanical or chemical processes) • Raw copper or brass metals, subject to availability • Personal accident insurance during class hours Class What's Not Included in the Price: • Silver raw material (Approximate 50€ - 150€) • All pieces made by the student are weighed at the end of the module, and the cost of the silver metal will be charged per gram, approximately €2 per gram.
