Jewelry Techniques Module 5

Course Description

In module 5, we refine the art of fire. Students will learn the chemical formulas of silver touch, as well as melting and casting techniques (rilheira). Unlike the other modules, which focused on controlling the various phases and mastery of fire, now we will play with different melting points and create tempered textures in the pieces to be executed. The proposed pieces are: Option 1: Bracelet or earrings with an articulated clasp Option 2: Ring or brooch with stone setting and/or clasp Max # Students: 3 Prerequisite Requirements: Modules 1, 2, 3 & 4 Language: English and Portuguese Learning Level: Intermediate Max # Students: 3 Duration: Meets weekly for 4 hours each Monday, for 4 weeks (16 hours total) Course Objective: to build upon the foundational skills learned in Modules 1 - 4 by introducing texturing techniques to create more complex pieces Finished Project Piece: Either (a) bracelet or (b) earrings or (c) ring or (d) brooch Activities We Will Cover: • Understand calculations and create silver alloys • Perform casting • Design and assemble elements to create a piece using the tempering technique • Draw designs for pieces and make components • Create and assemble elements for a piece with a clasp • Draw wire and/or roll sheet metal / temper elements / assemble / solder / create an articulated clasp / apply finishing touches • Optional: Set stones What's Included in the Price: Use of studio machinery and equipment • Use of individual and shared tools • Wear material (the material that undergoes gradual removal or deformation due to mechanical or chemical processes) • Raw copper or brass metals, subject to availability • Personal accident insurance during class hours Class What's Not Included in the Price: • Silver raw material (Approximate 20€ - 100€) • All pieces made by the student are weighed at the end of the module, and the cost of the silver metal will be charged per gram, approximately €2 per gram.
