Jewelry Techniques Module 4

Course Description

Module 4, focused on Portuguese filigree, challenges students to acquire new knowledge in ornamental techniques and elevate their technical skills. It will teach how to create support walls for filling the filigree, including the types of wire and thicknesses to use. With the filigree wire already prepared, students will learn to make various types of filigree fillings, such as "S's," "cards," and "curls," which they will apply creatively. Traditional decorative elements, as well as snails, will also be incorporated. Max # Students: 3 Prerequisite Requirements: Modules 1, 2 & 3 Language: English and Portuguese Learning Level: Intermediate Max # Students: 3 Duration: Meets weekly for 4 hours each Monday, for 4 weeks (16 hours total) Course Objective: to build upon the foundational skills learned in Modules 1 - 3 by introducing ornamental filagree techniques to create more complex pieces Finished Project Piece: Either (a) brooch or (b) pendant or (c) earrings or (d) ring Activities We Will Cover: Design / compose elements to create either (a) pendant or (b) brooch in ornamental filagree: • Design Piece / Make Components / Execute Elements for Pendant / Brooch /Earrings • Pull Round Wire / roll / Shape into structures / Fill Filagree “S’S”, “Open Scale”, “Card” • Create Ornaments (snail and granule). • Solder / Embed / If Brooch, make Clasp / Finish What's Included in the Price: Use of studio machinery and equipment • Use of individual and shared tools • Wear material (the material that undergoes gradual removal or deformation due to mechanical or chemical processes) • Raw copper or brass metals, subject to availability • Personal accident insurance during class hours Class What's Not Included in the Price: • Silver raw material (Approximate 20€ - 80€) • All pieces made by the student are weighed at the end of the module, and the cost of the silver metal will be charged per gram, approximately €2 per gram.
