Course Description

Module 2 builds upon the first module by introducing more advanced techniques. Students will learn to create a solitaire ring using the driving technique with a star claw, crafted from the canevão prepared in Module 1. In this exercise, a pearl can also be incorporated. The following exercise involves making twisted wire rings or earrings, using either beaten twisted wire or double twisted wire. Students will pull wire on the wire drawing machine and wire pulling bench, gaining an understanding of the various phases of silver wire, from hardness to malleability, and developing the sensitivity to manage these states during the wire twisting exercise. Max # Students: 3 Prerequisite Requirements: Module 1 Language: English and Portuguese Learning Level: Beginner Max # Students: 3 Duration: Meets weekly for 4 hours each Monday, for 4 weeks (16 hours total) Course Objective: to build upon the foundational skills learned in Module 1 by introducing more advanced jewelry-making techniques and creating more complex pieces Finished Project Piece: 1 solitaire ring, 2 or 3 twisted wire rings, or a pair of twisted wire earrings. Activities We Will Cover: Create Adornment Pieces Using Jewelry Techniques: • Plan and organize work for the execution of claws with canevão • Pull wire for solitaire rings and twisted wire rings or earrings • Shape, anneal, and solder Course Content: • Execution of claws from canevão: o Sawed claws / cut and level / file / solder / sand / finish • Basic techniques for creating solitaire ring bands: o Draw wire / forge / cut / anneal wire / calculate ring size / shape / solder claw / finish • Basic techniques for creating twisted wire ring or earring bands: o Draw wire / cut / pull and twist wire / anneal wire / calculate ring size / shape / solder / finish What's Included in the Price: • Use of studio machinery and equipment • Use of individual and shared tools • Wear material (the material that undergoes gradual removal or deformation due to mechanical or chemical processes) • Raw copper or brass metals, subject to availability • Personal accident insurance during class hours Class What's Not Included in the Price: • Silver raw material (Approximate 20€ - 60€) • All pieces made by the student are weighed at the end of the module, and the cost of the silver metal will be charged per gram, approximately €2 per gram.
